Mattel did the costume for their
Korean princess unbelievably sloppily - I was very disappointed (cheap
fabrics, no underwear, the shoes didn't fit).
I said to myself that I should make my own variant of Korean court dress for this doll - but that would be better to
make a costume for a common maiden first. So I created O
Sun (O is surname, Sun is first name
- "goodness":-)). Korean traditional dress is called
"han bok" ( also han
bok, han-bok). It cosists of a wide skirt, called chima, which is wrapped with long sashes
above the chest, and a bolero-like jacket called jeogori (juhgori,
chogori), closed with a pair of long sashes. The costume is
embellished with a knotted pendant with tassels called norigae.
Because O Sun is not married, she has her hair plaited into
the braid.Under the hanbok, there are a pair of long,
wide silken bloomers, a long, one-piece slip worn
somewhat like a high-waisted, one-piece dress, a jacket-like piece
a little smaller than the jeogori and a pair of white cotton socks.
The doll's body is regular Barbie body with "ballerina hands"
+ I added elbow joints, so the arms are much longer now than the arms
of a normal Barbie. The head is an usual "superstar" face
mold, her teeth were extracted, the lips were sticked together and her hair was rerooted - I used soft viscose filaments.
